Diabetes Education Program
A Path to Better Health
Taking control of your diabetes is a powerful step toward a healthier life, and we are here to support you! The Health Alliance for the Uninsured offers an introductory education program designed for Oklahomans learning to navigate life with diabetes.
Our program provides a welcoming, judgment-free space where you can learn the fundamentals of blood sugar management, nutrition, and healthy living.
What to Expect
The Diabetes Education Program is an 8-week, group-based program led by trained Community Health Workers. These classes are interactive, supportive, and focused on making real-life changes that fit your schedule and budget.
Our program is broken into two key parts:
Individualized Support
Your journey begins with a one-on-one visit with a Community Health Worker. There, you will talk about your health, needs, and goals.
8-Week Group Sessions
You will meet with a small group for one hour each week to discuss health topics, share experiences, enjoy creative activities, and plan how to use what you learned at home.
Our Core Objectives
We focus on small victories that lead to long-term health improvements. Throughout the program, you will learn exactly what diabetes is, how it affects the body, and why consistent treatment is a life-changing priority.
As you build this foundation of knowledge, you will work toward 4 key goals.
Improving Well-Being
Starting healthy habits to help you feel your best.
Active Living
Aiming for 150 minutes of activity each week (like a brisk walk).
Weight Management
Working toward a 3-5% reduction in your body weight.
Home Monitoring
Learning how to check your blood sugar levels at home.
“We don’t seek perfection—we seek improvement!”
Our Diabetes Education classes are a judgment-free place to learn more and try your best. Each session is built on respect, kindness, and the understanding that meaningful change starts small, and any step forward counts.

Making Diabetes Education Accessible for Everyone
Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney disease, blindness, and dental complications. At HAU, we believe that financial status should never be a barrier to life-saving health information that can help patients effectively manage this condition. The Diabetes Education Program, along with our other resources, is provided at no cost to Oklahoma’s uninsured patients through the strategic coordination of our network clinics and the generosity of our supporters.
When you support this program, you provide more than just education—you provide a lifeline to Oklahoma’s patients and help improve our state’s overall health outcomes. Together, we are working to:
Prevent Complications
We teach patients how to manage health today to avoid emergency room visits and life-altering complications tomorrow.
Optimize Management
We help patients understand how nutrition and activity work alongside prescriptions for the best outcomes.
Strengthen the Front Lines
We empower Community Health Workers to act as expert advocates and guides for Oklahoma’s most vulnerable patients.
