Supporting Oklahoma’s Health
About HAU
The Health Alliance for the Uninsured is the door for access to healthcare services for those who would otherwise be unable to obtain them.
As Oklahoma’s healthcare hub, HAU coordinates the specialized resources and partnerships necessary to ensure that patients seen at free and charitable clinics receive the medical care they need.
45th
Oklahoma is ranked 45th out of 50 in the United States’ overall health.
Leading Cause
500k Oklahomans
There are about 500,000 uninsured individuals in Oklahoma.
8 Out of 10
80% of Oklahoma’s uninsured patients are in working families.
Driven By Purpose
Oklahoma is in a health crisis. According to US Census data, 11.7% of Oklahoma residents were uninsured in 2026—1 in 9 people. These individuals are less likely to receive preventive care and more likely to utilize emergency rooms, leading to hospitalization for conditions that could have been avoided. In fact, in 2021, almost 5,000 hospital visits across the state were preventable.
Oklahomans without health insurance have difficulty accessing a wide range of essential health services—including medical, dental, vision, behavioral, women’s health, and preventative care. This lack of access impacts all of us by straining emergency rooms and increasing uncompensated care costs.
As a community health collaborative, HAU’s purpose is to bridge that gap by making quality care available to Oklahoma’s underserved populations. As a network of physicians, safety net clinics, hospitals, and various public and private partners, we work to improve health outcomes for all of our neighbors.
Ensuring Wide-Ranging Care
The Health Alliance for the Uninsured ensures that Oklahoma’s free and charitable clinics have the resources and support they need to effectively care for their uninsured patients. We do this by focusing on 5 core programs:
Care Connection
Our team strategically coordinates hundreds of specialists who provide free diagnostic testing, specialty consults, and surgical care for clients of HAU partner Safety Net Clinics in Oklahoma.
Medication Assistance
For many uninsured individuals, prescription medication is essential, but out of reach due to cost. We assist clients cared for by free and charitable clinics in receiving free medications to manage acute and chronic health conditions.
Diabetes Support Programs
HAU is ready to help Oklahomans take control of their health. Through these programs, we educate patients on diabetes and help patients implement changes that improve their overall well-being.
Navigation Services
This service is designed to help uninsured individuals locate a free and charitable clinic in Oklahoma that matches their medical needs. Our closed-loop system ensures each client has access to their chosen clinic.
Resources for Safety Net Clinics
HAU is a hub of support to the Safety Net Clinic network of over 80 free and charitable clinics statewide. We provide these professionals with supplies, information, training, essential PPE, and more.
